A little while ago
trixtah gave me a book (Wicked: The life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire) cos she couldn't get into it. I not bloody surprised - it is awful. Having said that I did manage to get to the end. I'd love to say I know what the point of the book is but to be honest I don't. I know what it was supposed to be about - an examination of evil. It fails dismally in achieving this. In fact if anything it muddies the examination with all sorts of superfluous crap.
The biggest problem for me was I couldn't find a likable character in the entire tome. Without a character for me to relate to or sympathise with it made for a long and boring read. I got there through sheer determination to finish over any enjoyment in the reading.
My score 2/10 and it only gets a 2 cos the premise was so promising. It's unfortunate that it couldn't deliver.

And you totally summed it up: each and every one of the characters I encountered (as far as I got) were either wankers or pathetic or both.
I liked the premise of it too, which is why I actually bought the thing without reading it in the library first! Oh well, plenty more books in the sea.
